5 Top Tips for Pre Competition Preparation

November 27, 2018

We get into the nitty gritty with help from Dr Jim Taylor on getting prepared for the competition season. He gives us his tips and tricks for mental and physical preparation to get the best out of you, out on the slopes (be they artificial or snow!)

1. Get a good night's sleep the 2 nights before the race.

Sleep gives you the physical energy needed to give your best effort in a race. Feeling rested also gives you confidence and fires you up to ski your fastest.

2. Have a pre-race routine

Routines offer 2 benefits: First, you ensure you're as prepared as you can be to ski your best. Second, your routine is one thing you can control on race day (you can't control the weather, course, start number, snow conditions, terrain, or other competitors) so it will provide you with a sense of familiarity, predictability, confidence, and comfort that will help you ski well.

3. Focus on the process, not the outcome

Worrying about what place you'll finish or who you will beat will both distract you from skiing fast and cause you to get nervous. If you focus on what you need to do to ski your fastest (e.g: technique, tactics, attacking), you are likely to ski well. And if you ski well, you will likely get a good result.

4. Use mental imagery

On the morning of the race, see and feel yourself skiing the way you want that day. Use imagery before you get out of bed, during inspection, on the lift rides, and, finally, as part of your pre-race routine just before you start.

5. Bring it!

When you slide into the starting gate, you should have one simple focus, that is to go as fast as you can.
