Meeting Our Young Instructors

October 2, 2017

We here at Snowsport Wales love to encourage our young athletes to get involved in snowsports through more than just competing and one way to do this is to train to become a ski or snowboard instructor. One of our athletes, Joe Constantine, gives us an idea on why he decided to become a ski instructor.

Plans Released to Build International Standard Indoor Snow Centre in Wales

September 6, 2017

Plans have been revealed this week for a major new indoor snow centre in Merthyr Tydfil.

At 500 metres in length, the snow sport centre would be home to the longest indoor ski slope in the UK (the longest currently is in Manchester at 180m), and would be one of the longest in Europe. The land owners and lead development company on the project Marvel Limited have signed an agreement with Snowsport Cymru Wales to work together on the delivery of the state-of-the-art snow sport facility which could be the future training base for the Team GB ski and snowboard team, which currently travels year-round to indoor ski centres elsewhere in Europe.

Using an existing hillside in Merthyr the indoor snow facilities would be able to host international ski and snowboard events, provide great training for developing athletes and create amazing opportunities for new participants to get involved with snow sports.

Visually Impaired Ski Racing Duo aiming for Winter Paralympics in 2018.

August 30, 2017

Menna Fitzpatrick and Jennifer Kehoe are World Cup alpine ski racers, representing Great Britain as part of the British ParaSnowsport Team. They work as a team to complete the race as quickly as possible, while both crossing the finish line safely. It is similar to a Rally driving partnership with a twist: the driver can’t see where she is going!

Menna has a severe visual impairment, which means she competes in World Paralympic Alpine Skiing (WPAS) races with a guide. Jen skis in front of Menna and wears an orange hi-visibility vest over her race suit to help Menna see where she is. They have Bluetooth headsets fitted to their helmets so they can speak to each other as they ski.

August 30, 2017

In last months article we touched on the benefits that squatting can have on ski performance. In this months newsletter we will be focusing on giving an overview of basic squat technique that both athletes and parents can try out!

The Bodyweight Squat

Figure 1 - Start Position (Side)                  Figure 1 - Start Position (Front)

The starting position:
1) Hands should be placed on shoulders with elbows and eyes pointing forwards.
2) You should take a short and sharp breath in to help “turn on” your belly muscles.
3) Heels should be just outside of your shoulders and turned slightly ourwards (no clown feet).
4) You should be getting ready to sit down and backwards on to an imaginary chair.

Girl Power – Why More Girls Are Taking Up Skiing

August 24, 2017

SSW Ambassador Georgia Furlong tells us why she thinks more girls than ever are entering (and staying) in snow sports. Skiing is actually a bit of an anomaly in the sporting world in that there is an equal amount of girls and boys competing, with more ladies joining us every year!

"I’ve been involved with my local ski club and Snowsport Wales for over six years and during this time it’s been amazing to see a surge in girls being involved.

Here are some of the reasons I think this may be the case:

Coaches offer an open and welcoming atmosphere so parents feel confident that their children, especially young girls, are cared for and respected. At my ski club, there is a female coach who teaches younger children and this is very important when introducing young girls to snow sports as it makes them feel safe. Similarly when overseas with ski camps and races the presence of house mothers is reassuring for parents and young girls.
