We'd like to introduce you to each of our new Discipline Directors and their vision for the discipline they're in charge of! This week it's Nick Roe, Discipline Director of Alpine.

Nick Roe - Alpine Director

Nick has been involved with snow sports in Wales for over 30 years, initially as a teacher taking school groups to the Alps and subsequently as an instructor, training and qualifying on the artificial slopes. He is also a qualified BASI Alpine Instructor and Alpine Ski Leader with Snowsport Scotland. Over the past eight years he has gained his coaching qualifications and currently coaches with the West Wales Ski Club.  Nick has been a director on the board of Snowsport Cymru Wales for 8 years. This is his vision for Alpine Skiing in Wales...

"As a National Governing Body for snow sports in Wales our plans over the next three years are outlined in the following five core objectives:

  • Implementing programmes and activities to increase participation.
  • Developing instructors and coaches.
  • Supporting and encouraging the development of facilities.
  • Creating opportunities to develop athletes in all snow sport disciplines.
  • Supporting the development of excellence in Welsh talented snow sport athletes.

Within the Alpine discipline we already have a structure in place which provides skiers of all ages and abilities with the opportunity to progress through our competition pathway on both artificial slopes and snow.

Ski clubs in Wales are providing opportunities locally for young people to get involved in the sport at artificial slopes supported by excellent coaches and instructors.

As an organisation we are also actively delivering training schemes both to encourage development of existing coaches and also to train new members at our clubs.

So far so good but what else are we planning between now and 2020?

My first job as Alpine Director will be to form a small committee with representatives from all our clubs to plan the way forward based on the following 3 initiatives:

Firstly, and most importantly we need to promote participation and increase numbers skiing on the artificial slopes in Wales and within our ski clubs. Thousands of school children from Wales visit the Alps each year and it would be nice to see some of these continuing their skiing education as members of our clubs and progressing through the competition pathway. Currently Dave Ryding is ranked in the top 10 of World Slalom Racers and he started off his skiing on the artificial ski slope at Pendle in Lancashire.

Secondly, we need to encourage more skiers and ex-racers to become instructors and coaches in order to support this vision of increased skier numbers.

Thirdly, I want to improve communication between our affiliated ski clubs and ski slopes. Let’s make it a skiing community by improving links between all our current clubs and members and all other skiers in Wales who love the sport and would like to get involved. As a governing body we need to reach out and let people know what clubs already exist, where the skiing facilities are located and how they can get involved.
