Dragons Alpine Racing

June 5, 2018

Each month we will feature one of our fantastic clubs and take a look at what they have planned for the year ahead. We kick off this month with Dragons Alpine Racing. With the motto "ski fast, laugh lots", we had a chat with Georgina Kellen to find out all about the club's exciting plans for the jam packed 2018/19 season.

"Dragons Ski Club was originally started in the 1960s but sadly ground to a halt around the 1980s. Unlike today, where there is an abundance of ski clubs and academies to chose from, when I was looking for a snow club for my daughter, the choice was limited and I simply couldn’t afford the prices charged by the snow clubs around at that time. So Dragons was resurrected at the end of the last century, dusted off a bit, the name altered & Dragons Alpine Racing arrived on the ski racing scene.

It was always intended to be a small club with a strong feeling of family. We failed miserably at keeping it small but we have definitely maintained that 'family feeling', I am told often by our athletes and parents that we are their skiing family.

Dragons is a snow ski racing club, we are affiliated to SSW, although our members come from all over the UK & Europe. We offer a slightly more than school holiday training / racing programme. Most of the camps are in the Alps although we do offer some training on indoor snow. We have a dedicated team of hard working coaches, if you added up the years of experience our core coaches collectively have; it would amount to more than a century! Many of our members can be found amongst the coaching staff of the Academies.

Dragons is represented at the highest levels in ski racing, we have athletes in the Home Nations squads of England and Wales and we have a steady stream of athletes selected to the GB teams. We even have some highly ranked paralympians!!! Many of our members go on to full time programmes with Ski Academies in the Alps. That doesn’t mean we stop caring about them, they remain part of our family. As one member who went on to represent GB at a very high level said “Once a Dragon, always a Dragon.”

Our 2018/19 season kicks off this summer with a 5 day training camp at SnowWorld in Landgraaf, Holland, this is a joint camp with Snowsport Wales. In October we are offering two weeks training on the Grand Motte Glacier in Tignes. Althetes can join us for the full two weeks or just for the week of their half term. Both these camps are great opportunities for pre race training.

Race camps will be starting with the Anglo Scottish in Pilar, Italy over New Year, followed by the Welsh Alpine Championships in Champery, Switzerland at the end of January and the English Alpine Championships in Bormio, Italy in February. We incorporate a few days training before the racing starts on these camps. The season will end at the British Alpine Senior & Children's Championships around Easter time in Tignes France. All our camps can be joined as inliers or outliers, we encourage parents to get involved and join in the fun ~ if they want to!

Although we take ski racing and training very seriously, we also have lots of fun. Our mantra is & always will be ...  'ski fast ~ laugh lots!'"
