Ed Guigonnet Athlete Roundup

March 26, 2019

We caught up with Welsh athlete Ed Guigonnet to find out all about his experiences at the European Youth Olympic Festival, his time with Team GB and his upcoming races.

"Slalom: with bad conditions and bib 51 it was always going to be tough. I skied really well (even though I didn't realise that until I saw the video afterwards) and only just missed out getting into the top 30 after the first run, which would have made a huge difference. (In the second run, the top 30 set off in reverse order. You finish 30th, you start 1st !). I was 34th so started 34th. Pushed it to the limit, and then over the limit and came out. Disappointed, but pleased with my skiing.

GS: good bib (36) with the possibility of getting a good result. However luck wasn't with me - in hitting the 4th gate, I broke my pole in half ! Furious, I skied like I have never skied before (just going for it), but needed two sticks to negotiate one of the bottom gates and came out just before the finish. Looking at the video, I have never skied that well. But I've skied like that now, so I can do it again.

Parallel team slalom : this is a slightly different technique, and I've not had any practice at this, this year. In training the day before, I wasn't one of the best and moved down to reserve leaving the two boys places to those who had been practising for this race. I'm sorry I didn't participate, it would have been a really good experience, but it's the team that counts.

Being part of Team GB was just awesome. Great coaches, brilliant group and incredible team spirit. Here is a video of us walking into the stadium during the opening ceremony

I wasn't terribly lucky in my skiing, but really lucky in being part of Team GB. Thank you to everyone.

After a couple of days at home trying to catch up on missed school work, I am now back training before races next week. If I manage to reproduce my skiing from Sarajevo, then the results should start coming through. Watch this space !!"

We wish Ed all the best in his upcoming races and can't wait to see what the future holds for an athlete with his talent!
