Gareth Haines - Tutor Profile

December 30, 2017

It’s always interesting to find out the reasons and motivation behind a person getting into certain roles – it sometimes makes you think more about getting involved. We picked the brain of SSW tutor, Gareth Haines, to find out why he became a tutor and how he is working to inspire others to do the same.

Why did I learn to snowboard?

“I started surfing in my early 20’s and went on lots of surf trips in the UK and abroad with my friends. The thing about surfing is that you need one or two waves to make any trip the best it could be, we didn’t always get this, so we thought we should give snowboarding a go as it looked fairly similar and you get to ride for minutes at a time instead of seconds. After several lessons on a dry slope and a trip to Andorra, I was a changed man.”

Become an instructor? Me?

“I’d never done anything like it before, never stood up in front of a group of people waiting to hear what I had to say but I do like to help people get the most out of what they are doing in the best way possible. So after an informal interview and a weekend instructor course I started work in the winter of 1999 at the Cardiff Ski Centre.”

Experience

“Since then, I have travelled to many countries and worked with different snowsports schools, instructors, coaches, tutors and mentors from America to Switzerland, Japan, Austrailia and New Zealand. All the travelling and interactions have helped me constantly refine my advise to others heading out on their first winter holiday, or those looking to hone their technique and get from top to bottom as quickly as possible.”

Qualifications

“I started on the coaching pathway with the British Snowboarding Association (BSA), then continued with Snowsport Wales with the UK Snowsport qualifications until stepping up to the internationally recognised qualification with the British Association of Snowsport Instructors (BASI) for both skiing and snowboarding.
