Girl Power!

June 25, 2019

Snowsport Cymru Wales are really pleased and proud to see a significant rise in participation from females in snowsport activities through the past few years. At our schools events many of our competitions are now witnessing more girls than boys amongst the competitors, this is also happening at a club level. We believe there are a number of reasons why we see this phenomenon - excellent female role models in the sport being one great motivator for others to get and stay involved. We have been so lucky to have some fantastic female snowsports athletes featured on a World stage, including the recent successes of Menna Fitzpatrick and Jen Kehoe. Ladies like this achieving brilliance will have helped to inspire the next generation to get involved.

Talking of the next generation - This month we wanted to highlight some young female snowsport stars that are aiming for the top of the mountain.

Darcy-Jane Williams (Snowboard)
12 year old DJ is already hitting the massive jumps and kickers and competing at international entry level events in Europe. Spending 18 weeks on snow last season DJ put herself on the podium at several of the Valley Ralley events in Austria and aims to participate in the World Rookie Tour in 2020. DJ loves to snowboard, but she does have a few other sporting strings to her bow - she’s a very strong swimmer as well as competing in the UK Wakeboarding Tour.

Ffion Lewis (Alpine Skiing)
11 year old Ffi has just completed her final year on snow in the U12 age group and has now moved up to full size gates and courses of the U14s. Ffi’s results at U12 show just how much potential she has to continue her rise to the top. Winner of the Welsh skier of the year award 2018, she also went on to become Welsh Alpine Champion in slalom, British Champion on artificial slopes and Welsh Champion on artificial slopes for the last two seasons. Another great stat is that she’s been Welsh Primary Schools Champion for the past 3 years in a row!

Heather Heslop (Alpine Skiing)
12 year old Heather has been on the ski racing radar for a few years now.  Moving up the ranks last season from U12s (minis racing) to the U14 category, Heather continued here successes, winning the Welsh U14 Indoor and Outdoor titles in 2018. Heather also put in some great skiing to win the Welsh Schools U14 Title, representing her school Ysgol Gymraeg Bro Morgannwg. In addition to Heather’s great skiing performances she’s another all round athlete and compete in mini triathlons, running races, tough mudder events - usually winning, often beating the boys, always smiling!
