Going For Gold

March 5, 2018

Watching the Olympics over the last month, we can't help but feel inspired by athletes that have achieved feats most of us could only dream of. Surely getting to that standard requires hours of practice on the snow? Wrong! Many of the successful medal achieving athletes started on dry slopes.

Dave Ryding

In 1993 Dave joined Pendle Ski Club and competed on dry slopes throughout his school career. It's where his love of racing began and is what created the foundation for him to progress on to snow. In 2017, Dave managed 6 top 10 Wolrd Cup results and a staggering ninth place finish at the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang - being only half a second away from the bronze medal winner.

Billy Morgan

Big Air bronze medalist Billy Morgan is another dry slope to snow success story. Billy started on dry slopes at the age of 14 and ended up in 10th place in the Men's Slopestyle final in Sochi 2014. Not content with ending things there, the 28 year old stormed the Big Air event at the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics and sealed his bronze medal win with outstanding second and third jumps. At 28 (3 years older than his closest competitor) Billy proves that age really is just a number.

Many British athletes hone their skills and techniques on dry slopes - it's an integral part of the process to becoming a future World Cup and Olympic champion!

If you have been inspired and motivated by Olympic greats and want to give skiing, snowboarding or freestyle a go, head down to your local dry slope or check out their websites for what's on offer.
