Llandudno - Back to Bristle

September 30, 2019

Snowsport Cymru Wales are delighted to announce that work will start in October at the Llandudno Snowsport Centre to resurface the main slope with Ski Tech matting.  The planned reopening of the new slopes will be January 2020.

The £250k redevelopment project taken on by the owners of the facility John Nike Leisure was massively assisted by a facility redevelopment grant made available by Sport Wales and Sport England. Project funding from Sport Wales was enabled through a Welsh Government facilities improvement scheme called the Place for Sport fund. In total, £5m has been allocated by Welsh Government this year to help upgrade sports facilities up and down the country and make Wales a better place for sport.

Brian Davies, director of elite performance at Sport Wales and co-ordinator of the Place for Sport fund, said: “We’re delighted that so many clubs, across so many sports, are going to be strengthened because of the investments we’ve been able to make. We really hope these projects will have a lasting impact on new and existing participants for years to come. Hopefully, given the response we’ve had, we can make an excellent case for additional funding from Welsh Government in the future.”

Throughout this process this improvement scheme has been closely supported by Snowsport Cymru Wales, ensuring a long term future for the provision of snowsports in North Wales.

Reinstating this facility to Ski Tech matting will ensure that clubs can continue to thrive in the North Wales region, reengaging with an enhanced programme of activities. It will also mean the return of National standard competition to the North Wales venue with a full programme of events in 2020, including the Welsh National and Open Championships in September 2020.

Robin Kellen, Chief Executive at Snowsport Cymru Wales said "I’m really pleased and excited to see this redevelopment of facilities going ahead in North Wales. With recent Welsh Government and Sport Wales studies demonstrating a significant latent demand for snowsports (12% of school children and 9% of adults in Wales would like to take up snowsports) we believe there is a very strong case for increased participation. Thank you to everyone who has put in so much effort to bring this project to fruition."
