December 13, 2017

Snow-Camp's 6 week Graduate courses have been inspiring and developing young people's slope skills and raising awareness of vocational opportunities with presentations from industry professionals.

Snow-Camp are a youth charity using the power of snowsports to harness young peoples potential and expose them to positive pathways, with life-skill training, national qualifications and vocational opportunities within snowsports.

Here's more from Andrew Kimber, the Cardiff Programme Manager:

"We are striving to engage young people who wouldn’t traditionally have access to snowsport. After a very successful summer of 2 day First Tracks courses, Snow-Camp were extremely excited to be able to offer their 6 week Graduate programme, for the first time in Wales.

The Graduate course gives young people the chance to progress from First Tracks, hone their skills on the slope, listen and interact in talks from industry professionals and athletes to spark inspiration for possible careers, and complete an ASDAN Level 1 in Sports and Fitness. The ASDAN qualification adds to a young persons’ CV and engages them each week in tasks to log their progress, set targets, identify learning strategies and record their successes.

Young people from youth groups across South Wales have been out on the slope brimming with energy and determination to conquer new skills and further their understanding of the exciting world of snowsports. The group warmly welcomed presentations from; Georgia Hyett Snowsport Wales Ambassador, Jamie Barrow UK’s Fastest Snowboarder, Snowsport Instructors, Pete Delduca volunteer at Cardiff Ski and Snowboard Centre for 35 years and Robin Kellen Snowsport Wales CEO, all fantastic advocates for the power and passion of snowsports. Young people asked questions about pathways into employment, further training, the future of snowsports in Wales, being a member of the national squad, held a 2012 Olympic torch and find out what it takes to go over 90mph on a snowboard.

In its first year the Graduate course has attracted and engaged young people from; YMCA Cardiff Young Carers, The Willows Centre in Troedyrhiw, North Merthyr Cluster of Youth Clubs and Neath Port Talbot Youth Services. Snow-Camp are extremely thankful to Cardiff Ski and Snowboard centre and all the guest speakers for their support through both the First Tracks courses and Graduate courses, seeing the dedication, commitment and enthusiasm of the staff rub off on participants.

Plans are already in place for the First Tracks courses next summer to build on the success of this year and continue using snowsports to teach life-skills, qualifications and expose young people to the wider opportunities available, all vital for a young persons positive development."
