Snowsport Cyrmu Wales Launch 2020 Vision for Snow Sports in Wales

March 23, 2017
Following a period of consultation, Snowsport Cymru Wales have now launched their vision for the next few years development of the sport in Wales. Thank you to the members who responded with feedback during the consultation process.
The document will be reviewed and updated regularly and will form an essential pillar in measuring our success toward the targets that are set out in the 2020 Vision.

The 2020 Vision document sets out in simple terms:
  • Where we now.
  • Targets and objectives for 2017.
  • Where we want to be by 2020.
Each Discipline Director on our board is busy establishing a committee to help develop pathway opportunities and improve communication. It should be noted that not all disciplines of snow sports are starting from the same point with some clearly more established than others.
Development plans will develop on the basis of achievable and realistic goals, establishing the stages of delivery and then how they are funded. At this point we have no new funding so new activity will need to be self-funded in the first instance. Grant support from external agencies may be available in certain circumstances and this would be applied for on a case by case basis.
The document also sets out five core objectives for Snowsport Cymru Wales:
  • Implementing programmes and activities to increase participation.
  • Developing instructors and coaches.
  • Supporting and encouraging the development of facilities.
  • Creating opportunities to develop athletes in all snowsport disciplines.
  • Supporting the development of excellence in Welsh talented snowsport athletes.
Facility development must form a major part of taking our sport forward. With little development of facilities in the past 20 years we need to upgrade and modernise facilities to take the sport into the next 20 years. We also need to bring new facilities to Wales such as indoor snow and Nordic skiing opportunities. Some of the objectives within this area are ambitious, very ambitious - such as establishing plans for indoor snow facilities in Wales. However, we need to set the bar high to ensure the long term future for our sport and to take an initiative in leading the development of snowsports.
Coach and instructor training has also been highlighted as a major objective that will form part of our development in the short term future, without increasing numbers of coaches and instructors within our clubs and across disciplines we will struggle to increase participation and develop discipline activity.
Currently we have a crop of talented athletes who are achieving some great performances across disciplines, we will seek ways to continue to support these athletes and to create opportunities to develop the next generation.
Again, we would like to reiterate that the 2020 Vision document is very much a live document and that feedback and questions around this publication are welcome at any stage. We welcome your views by email to Chief Executive, Robin Kellen on robin@snowsportwales.net.
