Welsh Alpine Championships 2018

February 1, 2018

The time had come for our annual Welsh Alpine Championships in the beautiful Champery, Switzerland. 310 competitors descended on to the slopes to take part in both FIS and BASS races running over 4 days.

Unfortunately high avalanche risks and unsafe piste conditions ruled out the first day of racing.  The weather gods, however, took pity on us and after a small hiccup in the schedule we were granted 2 fantastic days of sunshine for our FIS slalom event and the first of our BASS races.

The weather forecast looked grim again for Friday but we once again dodged a weather fail to have clear conditions to start our BASS slalom races with the under 14 category. We finished Friday through a haze of fog, having successfully completed the day’s scheduled races. The athletes, however, may argue this success as the fog proved to be difficult to deal with – especially for our under 10 racers. These mini racers did show us that through sheer determination and will, they were definitely going to make it through the course.

Prize giving took place in the picturesque village square with the mountains as a backdrop to the presentation – although we did have to imagine them through the fog!

The results for the FIS races were as follows:

Women: Gold was taken by Lana Zbasnik, silver by Victoria Palla and bronze by Mathilde Dugast. 1st Welsh Female was won by Georgia Hyett.

Men: : Gold was taken by Kieran Norris, silver by Gael Zulauf  and bronze by Sandro Wiggenhauser. 1st Welsh Male was won by William Munday.

A huge congratulations to all our competitors – you are the reason why we run the event. A hearty thank you to all the parents and coaches that oversee the athletes to make the event the success that it is.

A special mention goes out to Robin, our CEO and all the race officials that made the Champs such a smooth process – even with programme changes and hiccups along the way.

Lastly but by no means least – a massive thank you to Christoph, Hotel Suisse and all those in Champery that make it possible to run an event like this every year. We are not only in awe of the beautiful surroundings but wouldn’t be able to run the event without your expertise and knowledge of the area and amazing hospitality.

Until next year, keep that count down going – the Welsh Alpine Champs are only going to get better!
